Rubin has another book called The Little Digital Video Book that is good. It
isn't geared towards any specific hardware or software but I found it to be
an excellent guide.

It's definitely a hands-on book. Basically a tutorial to help you get
the basics of FCP (or FCE). By far the best way to get your feet wet.
