iMovie 3.03 audio IMPORT dropouts

There are small gaps of dead silence as iMovie imports DV footage. It seems that it
completely mutes the sound if it is below a certain softness threshold. This is not tape
droput from the source.

I decided to work around by importing the audio alone as an aiff track from a burned CD.

Guess what - same issue once the audio track is in iMovie.

Anybody know what is going on?
