I'm just guessing because I've never tried it on  a portable, only my 
tower G4.

These sound like a bad disc. Happens.
As usual wait till it's fully encoded before burning, but that still 
sounds like a bad disc.
Or... wasn't there something about being unable to confirm the 90 
minute mode when it came up with a prompt?
