iDVD 4 archive option

Anyone out there with iDVD 4 had a chance to try the "archive" function?
How does this work?  Does it make a proprietary package that you have to use
iDVD to burn, or does it make a disk image that anything can burn?  Does it
check somehow to see if the DVD-R drive is internal?  Just wondering about
the possibility of FINALLY using an external DVD burner to burn iDVD discs.
