Can't help thinking about this.
  90 minute mode  as Erica pointed out once should actually be easier on 
a set-top not harder.
Mode sense error........
  Your DVDR may not be making a secure connection inside your laptop.
Have you dropped it?
Do you switch modules frequently?
I can't help but wonder if there is some intermittent physical problem 
here.
