iMovie to tape to FCP

Hi,
My husband exported his reedited iMovie 3 project back to camera tape and
didn't save his changes because he didn't want to lose the original version
(he says iMovie doesn't give you a "save as" option). When he went to play
the tape, some of the audio in the beginning was cut out. But he's lost the
edited version.

Why did it drop out the audio in the first place? That's the second time
there was some kind of glitch in iMovie.

He's thinking of importing the whole thing to FCP 1.0 and trying to fix just
the missing part in the beginning using that clip from the original. What is
the best way to do this? At this point it won't be an import from iMovie to
FCP, but an import from the camera. Are there any special settings he needs
to use when importing from the camera, or import just like he would normally
do with regular footage?
