DVD Movie Writer, HP DC3000

Does anyone know whether the HP DC3000 with  DVD Movie Writer (a 
converter, dvd burner and software package) can be used with the 
Macintosh? If not used directly (to convert VHS, etc. tapes to digital) 
can the dvd's this burner creates be used as source video for iMovie 
and/or Final Cut Express? It does encode in MPEG-2 with fixed and 
variable bit rates. I'm not planning on buying one, but a friend is.
