Final Cut Express help

Hello again everyone on the list. I've got a question and I'd 
appreciate it if someone could help me out. I've got a Final Cut 
Express 2 job I'm working on, my first-ever pro DVD release. I've got 
to to English subtitles over a Russian girl speaking, and 
unfortunately there's Japanese subtitles already in place in the 
data. So I need to find a way of putting a black or grey box over the 
subtitles that are already there -- however I'm being defeated so 
far. I am trying to use the rectangle effect, but it insists on 
putting a rectangle with a black backing over my video, which of 
course makes the rest of the video impossible to read.

Can anyone help me get this fixed or suggest any alternatives to 
using the Rectangle effect?
