Camera Stabilization through Software

Regarding software stabilization potential, keep in mind that the
DVCAM/DV video frame includes substantially more pixels than that which
will actually show on regular TV. In the broadcast community, they
refer to things "going home" to the end viewer. TV's have a lot less
resolution than is the NTSC spec. The concept of the "title safe" area
is tied to the error factors in TV manufacture. Not only are pictures
cropped, but often skewed left or right. "Title Safety" intends to make
sure text or other important information is GUARANTEED to be seen, or,
that it "goes home." It is also for this reason software stabilizers
can work to smooth out a shot. However, large errors in framing due to
less than perfect camera operation will result in the edges showing,
and this would ruin a shot. The not quite perfect solution in that
event is to zoom in on the video, which will quickly begin to soften
it. Better, however, to have a soft moment than to give away the magic.
