Oh... the page that deals with this has a mention of firmware as it's main subject... but this is not firmware installation - I believe you could describe it as activating a feature that Apple is witholding so far. It's called an "easter egg".
The required (tiny) files have code that (when the files are placed on the root drive) augments iDVD and, when the Burn button is Control-clicked, causes it to display a window that offers a choice of (connected) drives to burn to.

That's as far as I've got with it so I do not have a DVD that I burned externally yet - but it does look promising? [This tip appeared on this List about a week ago].
