CD/DVD players seem to be magnets for dust and accumulate enough to
interfere with playback in a year or so. The method I use is to open the
player's top cover to expose the LED which I wipe clean with a Q-Tip soaked
in iso-propyl alcohol. This works better than commercial cleaners.
