[MacDV] Canon transfer problems?

I seem to recall buzz sometime back about the Canon XL1 becoming 
unreliable over time during capture of recorded footage. I believe that 
it was said to occasionally produce dropouts.

I am at a community college that just received a small grant to update 
our camera equipment. We are considering three XL2s.

Does anyone recall those possible problems with the XL1 and/or have any 
opinions about the XL2? Or can your direct me to an archive or forum 
that might have information about the reliability of the XL2?

We have been using a XL1 for several years, but always capture from 
decks rather than the camera, so we have not experienced the rumored 
dropouts.

Any sage advice would be greatly appreciated.
