5400 rpm drives has been the minimum for capturing DV on a desktop machine,
that's what the first iMacDV had.
The 4200 rpm drives in laptops have been doing it just fine as well.

DV is 3.6 MB/second and you get more than double that with either of these
drives, though the 4200 rpm is cutting it close.

You could also just get an external 3.5 inch Firewire drive (7200 rpm) and
use that as your media drive.
