If you don't need to stop at midpoints, you can use an edge wipe to do 
much the same thing, quicker.

Just apply the wipe to the beginning of the line graphic in the 
timeline... mark where you want the line to stop moving with the cursor 
and then stretch the wipe over to the cursor.

Double-click on the wipe to open it in the viewer, and make the 
adjustments needed to get the correct wipe direction and angle.
