[MacDV] Ripping vs. importing

I may not have the terminology correct, but my question is,
has anyone here brought the contents of a commercial DVD into
iMovie both through MacTheRipper from the internal Mac DVD
drive, and through an A/D converter (such as the Canopus)
from an external drive? If so, have you seen any difference
in the quality of the resulting video, or in still frames
made from it?
