[MacDV] OT: Advice concerning software legalities

It is the responsibility of the seller to wipe the HD before the  
sale, so I wouldn't worry much, especially if you plan to buy new  
versions of the software anyway.  If it is software that came  
installed on the Mac when it was new, it should be on the Software  
Restore disks, - and I hope you did get those disks with your  
purchase - that software is clearly yours to use.

Manuals may be available on the web, along with helpful how-to web  
sites.  Bookstores carry many titles to supplement or even replace  
the manuals - this is a big business.  Getting one of these books can  
be well worth the money, search the web for reviews to see what might  
best suit your needs.

I've found that if you have access to the education discounts on  
Apple software, these can be great deals.  In the old days of OS 9  
and before, you could have a really bad crash that required a clean  
install of the system and other software, which made the extra hassle  
of reinstalling software and then the upgrade another irritation in  
an already miserable situation.  With OS X, these problems are  
largely gone - so getting older software with the upgrade included  
shouldn't be a problem, if from a reputable dealer.
