The new iMovie is easy to learn, fast to make rather simple videos,  
and supports the new HD/HDV/AVCHD cameras.
It allows you to "crop" a video (actually, scale) and also to rotate -  
a rather common mistake beginners make.

You give up laying off to tape, built in iDVD chapter markers, and the  
ability to separate the audio from the video (there is a wonky  
workaround that's harder to do than taking the clip into MovieTools or  
QT Pro).
You also give up Slow/Fast, and every single audio filter and all the  
video effects.

Invest in David Pogue's iMovie Missing Manual.

You can download iMovie 6 from Apple, and as long as you are not  
shooting on one of the newer codec cameras, you can use it until Apple  
stops supporting it in the latest OS.
