iTunes Soundcheck

Hi, a couple of questions about iTunes Soundcheck, since I'm not able to try 
it out myself.

1. How well does it work?

2. How does it work, mathematically speaking?  Is it actually just dynamic 
range control (i.e. amplitude compression)?
