The reason for this limitation is that the Wolfson chip (WM8731) in the 
iPod only supports monaural mike-level input.  The good news is that it 
also supports stereo line-level input, and that the iPod has plenty of 
pins on the cradle connector for Apple to have brought these out.  If in 
fact the inputs are there, you may hope for a new release of iPod 
firmware with support for a stereo preamp on the cradle connector.
