I have done several presentations in Apple stores where I set up a brand new profile in 4 minutes from start to finish (not including installation of the software), and I get 95-96 percent accuracy consistently after only 4 minutes of training. Correction hasn't changed, but, ironically, we have received a couple of messages in the past few weeks from former Dragon users who say they like the way we do it better. The issue with Correction is actually pretty simple: Dragon allows you to select a word inside an application and the choice list pops up when you do this. The problem is that you can't do this in absolutely any application on Windows - only those that Dragon can work with in this way. Our solution is to present the user with a Correction window - sort of like a story editor in a page layout program - where you perform the corrections. This method allows you to perform Corrections regardless of what application you are using. Many Dragon users prefer the way Dragon does it and either don't use non-supported apps, or are OK with that limitation. As we have seen, some Dragon users actually prefer the way we do it. The issue is mostly one of preference. Ironically, many of those who used iListen and then switched to Dragon after being told how much better it is have come back to us with exactly the same complaint: only they say that they couldn't get used to the way Dragon does things and prefer our way. This has led us to believe that what you learned first has a lot to do with what you prefer. Now when I'm correcting by voice, instead of having to say "Press Extend Left" three times I can just say "Extend Left Three". Let's be careful here - the new Macs will run Windows but you will have to buy Windows ($80 to $300 depending on features) and currently you _will_ loose the Mac OS X environment while you're running windows because it can only run one or the other. There are rumors of a more integrated environment coming sometime (maybe Leopard - whenever that comes out) but to my knowledge anyway Apple has made no announcements or promises in this regard. The current implementation is officially "Not Supported" by Apple and while it does work you can get into some situations where the solution is not simple. And she would need Pro if I've understood the situation correctly. For the moment, I'd advise trying out the latest iListen, making sure she has a good mike and does the training in depth, and that she runs a good bunch of docs through "Learn my writing style". Then it's basically a case of remembering that you're talking to a computer not a human. If it makes a mistake, the worst thing you can do is get cross with it and change your "tone" - it'll ruin your recognition accuracy. This is a piece of software where reading the manual is not optional if you want to use it properly and get the best out of it, too. You, in fact, do "give up" the Mac OS X environment if you are running Boot Camp. While it is true you can use Parallels to run Windows in its own window on Mac OS X (thus having both operating systems active at the same time), you cannot use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to dictate or control any Mac applications. You can, however, use iListen to dictate into a Windows application when running Parallels (as we recently found out). There are limitations - such as it doesn't look like Correction will work - but you can dictate! Best Regards, Chuck Rogers, Chief Evangelist MacSpeech, Inc. I imagine they will eventually get correction working, maybe in version 1.5 or so. As for the talk about ilisten being less expensive, I think this misses the point somewhat. Of course we all have limited budgets, voice recognition software is not really an optional item for many people that use it, and I think most of us would prefer better software even if it costs more. If MacSpeech had to charge $500 for its program, I would happily pay it-- that's how much I spent on a PC and Windows, at least. Seriously: if paying more would get a better recognition engine, I think a lot of people would do so. if I could put that money into a Mac-only company and a top-and Mac-only program, that would be my first choice.
