Hector, the process is kind of a pain until you get used to it, but  
here's what you have to do:

1) Close the powerbook, allowing it to go to sleep.  Make sure there  
are no peripherals plugged in, not even the power adapter.

2) Plug in Keyboard and Mouse, plus any other peripherals.
3) Plug in the monitor.
4) Plug in the power adapter.
5) Press the space bar to wake up the computer if it hasn't already  
done so.

Your powerbook may seem to wake up, ask you for your password, then  
go back to sleep.  Sometimes it gets a little confused.  Press the  
space bar again to wake the computer up and you should be good to go!
