Thanks to Shawn and all the others too numerous to mention for your 
suggestions.

In the end I picked up a Dazzle Hollywood and am very pleased with 
it. It works well with iMovie (apart from a couple of very minor 
wrinkles). I've now put together my first "movie" from material on 
analogue Hi-8 tape and am now looking at mastering VCD's that I can 
send out to friends and family back in the old country.

I've also now joined a sister list:

be a useful source of tips and advice on all matters relating to Mac 
and digital video.
