just noticed you asked if it is "safe".

I haven't lost any data. But you should always keep a backup of your 
data just in case regardless of any other factors.

I've recently bought a Momobay with 40 gig Travelstar and with Mike 
Bombich's Carbon Copy Cloner (which uses the shell command "ditto") you 
can create a mirror of a volume with just a few clicks.
