Safari Question

I am baffled about this --

On a web page there is a customized counter -- very small, outlined in
pale blue, with white background and thin black lines...very unassuming
and reading around 1694 hits......

In comes a brand new download of Safari, and all working well, (albeit
a bit slow, and except bookmarks seem hard to get to) but when I go to
the above website, I can't get anything except a huge ugly
blue/black/neongreen default counter to show, and it has started from 1
as if there were no hits on the site! How can this be? I have all
cookies turned on and all javascript turned on as I went through all
the prefs.

How does Safari not recognize the counter format, nor the previous
hits? I thought "hits wuz hits"?
