Most recommendations for having the monitor at eye level come from people who have vested interests in selling your something. A monitor stand. After much research, I found that non biased sources were questioning this common belief and many were finding that having a monitor at a neck relaxed position was best.

When you are sitting up at your desk, if you should happen to nod off, your neck muscles will relax and your head will tilt down. That is what I am reading to be the most strain reduced position. It makes sense to me. I then built a desk with a hole in it so that my monitor could be sit below the desk with it tilted up for a proper angle. After 3 years of this, I've not had any problems and while working on a computer 12-18 hours a day, and have not had any neck strain. Desks historically have not had this monitor hole in them cuz monitors haven't existed as regular desk items for all that long. And desks aren't manufactured this way cuz people typically don't think it is necessary while monitors are all different sizes as well.

Take a look at the research instead of the advertisements and what your friend uses.
