There was no dim screen, it was just asleep and wouldn't wake up. BUT, I
discovered that I had substituted a different battery, apparently an "A"
series model in place of the M8511 series that came with it. (1GHz TI). When
I placed the original battery back in - presto! No more sleep problems.

Will keep an eye on it to see if any further problems show up.
