When hooked to a TV or external monitor to watch DVD's, I've "fooled"
the LCD into shutting off by closing the lid and putting the machine to
sleep, then unlatching the lid and raising it slightly to wake it up.
After the HD spins up, but before the LCD comes on, shut the lid again
and latch it. Make sure you have a USB mouse hooked up to click on
"Play Movie" on the TV/monitor screen and sit back and enjoy. If I have
both a keyboard and a USB mouse hooked up, along with an external
display, I can wake the machine up without raising the lid at all and
the LCD stays dark while I work with the external display.

This is with a G4/400, so your mileage may vary with other models.
