It has many advantages in certain situations.

a) A consistent gui approach for non unix-head Mac users

b) Ease of use to drag and drop multiple files

ftp _should_ just work like a shared volume in the Finder in many 
respects.

For the times where I do need to expand what I can with ftp, I just use 
ftp from the shell.

PS Don't forget Apple-K and then  ftp://user:pass@server  (although 
this gives me the beachball of death unrecoverably if the ftp server is 
not accessible, so be warned).
