AT&T doesn't permit CSD (GSM but not GPRS). For one thing, their $99/month unlimited minutes plan could have led to virtually free data use.

But other carriers (T-Mobile, Cingular) do work with CSD (standard modem calls, using the supplied scripts of OS X)
