This seems to be the case. I used DVDBackup to copy a DVD to my internal disk to play it from there. Apple's DVD Player had a difficult time at a few spots; crashing in one instance, making me lose 
any other control like pause or fast forward in others. However, VLC, the open source player did just fine.
