mail.app problem...but different this time

Well since I seem to be getting the "problems"
Here's another one...sheesh!!!

my junk mail filter doesn't seem to be working at all.
I put it on (training) and despite junk mail coming in it doesn't even 
mark any of it as junk.
none what so ever.

I didn't want to trash the pref's as I wasn't sure this would take my 
account information, addresses etc...with it
making me have to re enter things.

Ideas on why the mail.app may not be working?
