One other thing you might want to look into is the amount of free space 
on your drive. If it is too full, then OS X, as many other *nix-en, has 
problems allocating enough free space for the file. If the allocation 
fails then the file thats written will become corrupt. Since preference 
files are read and written very often, these files are your first sign 
of trouble.

As a rule of thumb, keep 10%-20% of your partitions capacity empty.
