dead SuperDrive?

I have been using the Superdrive recently on my 1.25 G4 Al-book, to 
read and write DVD and CD-R and CD-RW.

It has not been behaving "perfectly": sometimes it does not read the 
disk, sometimes it does not write the disk correctly.

This evening, the drive will not even "take" a disk.....

The Apple System Profiler still shows the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 drive.

I think my SuperDrive has DIED !!

Is there any other test of the drive (that does not involve putting a 
disk in, which I cannot do)?

It looks like a return for repair under warranty.

Any other ideas?
