i am fairly certain that they are 'generic' 16bit 44.1KHz D/A 
converters...

nothing amazing...

i'd guess that of your application is critical enough where you need to 
raise questions regarding the quality of the factory input then you 
most certainly will need to invest in a firewire audio interface...  or 
some such equivalent.
