I do agree with you that it "doesn't come close 
to the functionality and power that a 
laptop/powerbook has" but many people do not use 
nor need all that, but need more than a PDA can 
offer.

I have many (PC) colleagues struggling in the 
heat of Saudi Arabia with the weight of their 
blocks of concrete (aka laptops), who might be 
glad of a uPC, as OQO call it.
