I wonder if it isn't just a bad drive.  Will a CD load into the drive 
so you can hold down the C key?  For the Record My Ghz Superdrive came 
with a 4200Rpm 60Gig.  Hitachi now makes a liquid bearing 7200Rpm 60Gig 
with about 3 times the throughput.  Talk about a speed bump!!
