Something of note: reading DVD-R is only half the speed of reading DVD-ROM on both 17" models. So, if you burn your own disks, the maximum reading speed is 4x. That would make reading speeds 5.52 MBps, assuming perfect conditions. I'm not sure how likely it is for one to hit that maximum speed, though. So, out of curiosity, did you run the 3rd-party SuperDrive firmware update that increased a few speeds of various media? Perhaps DVD-R reading speed was increased too...
