I think the answer to your question depends on the software.

Many now come with an un-install package, that does that job for you.
Search for

	"un" AND "install"

and see what you find.

Sometimes you simply have to search for all the files associated with 
that application by name or by creator (as the name may be obscure), 
and then manually delete them,.  That is what I had to do, to make my 
Powerbook Norton-free (a few years ago).
