The 1394 kernel extension is in (and loaded at boot) the x86 dev  
build of OS X even though the dev box doesn't have a Firewire port.

What you will loose is Target Disk Mode, since that requires  
OpenFirmware to boot, and the proprietary Phoenix bios doesn't  
support it.
