I've usually found that the returns on investment in significant speed upgrades are low. Bumps in disk and RAM are useful, but for bigger investments in CPU speed or logic boards or new external devices, it's much better to save the money for a new machine. Three years is getting to be the beginning of the end of useful life if it's a "need it everyday" machine. A new Powerbook will get you twice the performance + additional features. The veteran TiBook still has another year or two of juice in it to play a secondary role and be a feasible backup machine when the new primary has problems or needs to go to the shop. -- Dennis Fazio dfz at mac.com
