Kaskudoo - our resident pastry chef ! - I think this stone slab is a
good idea, certainly if the alternative is a wood or leather-topped
desk.

It is a matter of thermal conductivity (stone is good) and thermal
capacity (stone is good).

I would put the stone in the freezer before you start, to get as much
heat out as possible.

If you have a glass-topped desk, then that could also be fine.

An aluminium block (best specific conductor of heat) or a copper
block is also an option, especially if it has fins for air cooling.

Those in banking or equally lucrative professions might try gold
ingots or plaques.

As I said, conductivity is the property you seek, combined with
thermal capacity.

What I mean by the latter is that eventually (if you are doing hours
of video conversion) then the stone will also get hot, and lose its
cooling effect (which is a function of the temperature difference).

When I was doing a lot of CPU intensive work, I was using plastic
bags with ice cubes in, as a bed for the Powerbook, which kept it
nice and cool for a few hours.

regards, Trevor
