The x86 dev boxes boot and run Windows just fine

VMWare.  But there's some caveats in porting PowerPC code to x86.   
Your virtual machines will probably perform better than OS X.

Check out the system requirements for iTunes movie playback on PowerPC:

Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
500 MHz G4 processor or better
QuickTime 7.0.3 or later
16MB video RAM

On x86:

1.5 GHz Pentium class processor or better
32MB video RAM
