[Ti] Lower memory slot on PB G4?

For the second time, the lower memory slot on my PB G4 15" 1.25GHz 
isn't seeing the memory it contains.  The memory DIMMs are identical 
256MB cards; they came with the PB from Apple. Swapping the DIMM 
cards doesn't change which slot shows the problem (e.g. it doesn't 
move with the DIMM), so I don't think it's the memory itself.

The machine runs incredibly slowly on just 256MGB, but it does run.

A quick Google search turns up several places where people are 
discussing similar problems.  But that doesn't really help me deal 
with my hardware (I'm not even sure it makes me feel any better)

Has anybody got suggestions for how to deal with this?  Would it work 
to buy a 1GB DIMM and put it in the "upper" slot?
