First guess is the dual concerns of cost and connectivity.

There are VASTLY more computers out there with USB, Wintel - Mac &  
Mactel :-)
Putting two connection standards into the nano will raise the cost of  
the unit.

This is a mass market consumer item
So Apple panders to the 80%
