Can the OS be installed on an external drive? Maybe I could do that and see if I could save some of the data?

I have tried as you stated: Got the following:
1. Invalid Volume Header
2. Checking HFS Plus volume
3. Checking Extents Overflow file
4. Invalid sibling link
5. Repairing volume
Repeats step 1 - 5 twice more
and then receives:
ERROR: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS Volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of error
Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
Does this mean R.I.P. ?
Probably.
You might need a bigger gun, Diskwarrior. Sounds like the directory is hosed.
common causes: drive failing, disk too full, no maintenance performed at regular intervals.
Option 2 if there is no info you really need, try an erase and reinstall.
