Looks like I've solved it.

My Powerbook was bought in the US and I understand the regulations  
there don't allow certain of the higher channels specified within the  
standard to be used. My UK Base Station was operating on channel 13  
by default. Changing this to channel 9 allowed it to be visible to my  
US Powerbook.
