The newly released MacBook Pro's. ;-) But I have a question. One of the build to order options it to swap the Dutch keyboard layout for a International English one. Can someone point me to where I can find out more about the differences? Because I'm liking the US-keyboard layout and I do not want the IJ digraph on my keyboard, nor do I want shift-2 to mean anything but @. Since then my display has the tendency to go half black, and I have to move the display up and down until it goes back to normal. I tried plugging the VGA adapter back in, and although the problem is still there, it is clearly less so. I am woe to open my Powerbook, and I've heard about the orange monitor ribbon and how difficult it is to fix a loose one. Judging from my experience with the VGA adapter, might the port itself be a bit loose, and is that easier to get to than the orange ribbon? Thanks. I checked vents and blew everything out, but nothing appeared clogged. No luck there. Then I disassembled the thing and it thermal connectivity *appeared* solid between the processor and heat sink. This is definitely the source of the heat, so should I try applying more thermal grease? How much is the *right* amount for a TiBook? Is there a brand that someone really recommends? I'm currently getting about 30 minutes of work time before I need to give it a 20 minute break. Since I live on this thing, those aren't optimal working conditions. Rafe - since you checked all the physical things, it is now perhaps just a question of amount of heat generated versus amount of heat lost. I know that when I have many applications running, particularly CPU intense ones such Virtual PC, my aluminium Powerbook gets pretty hot and the fans are working hard. This is more so now that the ambient temperature has risen by 3?C in our apartment (summer approaching). So I minimize the number of applications open. Use a utility that shows the CPU % use to help in that process? I also keep the back edge of my Powerbook about 1 cm off the glass desk top, to improve ventilation / convective heat loss. When I had a Titanium Powerbook, I had a Tote'n'Tilt handle that also used to keep the back edge of the Powerbook off the table about 1 cm. I miss that handle..... My friend, who has a Dell laptop, cooks his bacon and eggs for breakfast on his trackpad, so we must not complain too much. regards, Trevor From tarik at opalblue.com Sun Jun 10 06:58:48 2007 From: tarik at opalblue.com (Tarik Bilgin) Date: Sun Jun 10 07:06:05 2007 Subject: [Ti] TiBook Overheating In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <4E1DE857-A549-4715-8716-C9FB767DCD0B@opalblue.com> On 10 Jun 2007, at 03:16, Rafe Day wrote: > Dennis: > > Thanks for your advice. What *can* happen with thermal grease is over time the conductivity of the grease does start to fail. If you removed the heat sink from the CPU then you will have disturbed the heat sink -> grease -> CPU transition, so i recommend you reapply. There is a lot to say about how to do this, so the best thing to do is to point to a website with more information: http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2intelas5.html (These guides are for Intel processors, but once you understand the important points you can apply them to any processor). Top tips: 1. Don't use too much grease 2. Make sure all exposed areas are covered evenly with a credit card or similar plastic card to spread it. 3. Make sure both surfaces are clean of grease before you begin. 4. Once you place the heatsink on the the CPU don't remove it again! -- Tarik From rafe_day at nerdshack.com Sun Jun 10 15:16:44 2007 From: rafe_day at nerdshack.com (Rafe Day) Date: Sun Jun 10 15:16:58 2007 Subject: [Ti] TiBook Overheating In-Reply-To: <3AEE0E72-828D-48F9-99D8-77C5CB7D3787@consultant.com> Message-ID: Trevor: I do keep it elevated (I crafted an aluminum frame that is hollow in the middle and keeps everything elevated 1.5 cm) so there should be plenty of air flow. My concern is that this is a new behavior. It didn't overheat until a few months ago, and now it goes from sleep to hot enough to trigger all fans at full blast in about half an hour, regardless of how many apps are running (I've been trying to keep it in the 1-3 range, which is tough for how I use it). (Boo - my kids are real bummed since that was the computer they used.) They also took the case for the Titanium. (Empty. I guess they thought it went with the iBook.) We're been talking the insurance company, and while can identify the iPods and the computer, I can't remember the name of the case. It was Westerfield or Waterfield or something like that. I believe they closed up shop a little bit back, so it it harder to find them on the internet. It cost something like $50-60 I think, but I have to tell them what it was to get any money for it.
