The main disk controller is in the disk itself, but there is a bunch of I/O circuitry on the motherboard between the CPU and disk that could be damaged. I suspect it is coincidental to the spill unless the spill caused a power short or surge in the area of the battery connection that damaged motherboard components. You can try MacService. They'll do overnight shipment and repair. PB G4 logic board repair would be $350-$600 depending on model (Titanium or Aluminum). I've used them for a couple of older portables and can recommend them. They actually repair the board itself rather than replacing it as Apple does. That's why it's cheaper.
