[X-Apps] Problem: Apple Talk & Asante Router

Albert,
You said you have "File Sharing set to FTP". This is not quite correct.
Each of the choices listed in System Preferences -->Sharing is a
separate service. Filesharing is not FTP, and FTP is not filesharing.

You need to turn on "Personal File Sharing". You probably don't need
FTP turned on, unless you plan to use an ftp client to transfer files
back and forth. This would mean learning another application.

1. Turn on personal filesharing on the G4 (the one from which you want
to copy files). While you are in the Sharing pane of system
preferences, check the computer name. Is it "Albert's computer"? If so,
change it to something that identifies the G4 as such, or by location,
etc. "G4", "Office Mac", "Speedy", etc. On the G3, change the computer
name to "G3", "Kitchen Mac", "The Old Beast", or some such easy to
recognize name.

2. On the G3, if the Connect to server dialog is open and still doesn't
see the G3, close it and reopen it. You should then see the G4 listed.
Doubleclick on it.

3. Enter BOTH the username and the password of your account on the G4.
If you are sitting at the G3, and trying to connect to the G4, you
would want to enter the G4's username and password. If you do this
correctly, and the username you used is an admin user, you'll be
offered both the entire hard drive or your user folder. pick one, not
both.

In addition to the computer-naming scheme I outlined above, there is
one more thing you can do to make things easier. Use the SAME username
on both machines. When the dialog box comes up asking for username and
password, it autofills the username. Unfortunately, it can only guess,
and it auto-enters your username on the machine at which you are
sitting. So, as an example, if you are sitting at the G3, trying to
connect to the G4, it will fill in your G3 account's username. Not
recognizing this is the cause of roughly 95% of the filesharing
"authentication errors" or "bad password" call I get.

So to summarize:
Your 1 mistake was to turn on FTP instead of filesharing. Make sure you
turn on Personal Filesharing, not FTP.

The next 2 things to watch for:

Make sure both machines have easy-to-recognize names.
Use the correct username and password for the machine to which you are
trying to connect.

In the "Just won't work" category:
The "Network" icon in the finder will do absolutely nothing for you at
this time. It will only show items on a "netinfo" network, which you
generally only find in business or school networks.
In the "Hallelujah" category:
This will be changed in Panther (10.3). The Network icon will function
just as you expected it to. It will show available network volumes
(filesharing via appletalk , smb, or rendezvous). The connect to server
dialog will only be necessary for connecting to shares which don't
advertise themselves on your local network.

Wow. Awfully long-winded answer for a "checked the wrong box, almost
there" message.

For others on the list:
Yes, Finder and Terminal both do FTP. Finder is one-way, Terminal
requires one to learn how to use ftp on the command line. Neither is an
optimal solution for this case.
