I get a lot of static when trying to record voice with Audacity. I'm wondering if I have some setting somewhere askew or if something could be haywire with the program. It happens with several different microphones, but not with the built-in mike on my powerbook. It also does not happen with other recording programs, such as Garage Band. (They create other problems that audacity does not.) Anyone had this happen? TIA. Seem like it shouldn't be. Is there something that could be slowing it down? I'm running 10.4.3 on a 1.25 GHz Al Powerbook with a gig of ram. It has an 80 gig disc with about 50 used. TIA. This won't be very helpful, but I have to say you shouldn't be having any problems with 30 GB free on the disk. I will note the only time I've ever gotten that message was on an iMac DV (veeery old by today's standard) when the drive was near full. Defragmenting the drive solved the problem for me. It may or may not for you. One thing you might do is start up Activity Monitor (its in the Utilities folder inside Applications), select "Disk Activity" near the bottom and move to where you can (hopefully) see that graphic while importing. One thing to note is if there is any disk activity prior to importing. While Activity Monitor is going, you might as well also choose the "System Memory" tab and see what it shows. Do you still have some free memory while importing, or do the Page ins/outs numbers start increasing because you're using virtual memory? That might give you a couple things to try if nobody else has a better idea. -Mike From peterstj at earthlink.net Thu Jan 11 07:39:23 2007 From: peterstj at earthlink.net (Peter Saint James) Date: Thu Jan 11 07:39:30 2007 Subject: [X-SW] Disk too slow In-Reply-To: <01B5F0FF-D7EF-4FCC-8D0C-E1C06D69F75A@scotist.com> References: <974BEE7B-B32F-45D5-89E4-8B9BBA356BE3@earthlink.net> <01B5F0FF-D7EF-4FCC-8D0C-E1C06D69F75A@scotist.com> Message-ID: <371E10DA-307D-445D-A2E7-C054CFBF72B7@earthlink.net> On 5 Jan 2007, at 3:24 PM, Scott wrote: > > > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42964 > _______________________________________________ Thank you, Scott. The article seems to answer the question of why I was getting "disc too slow" warnings in iMovie. I suspected that the disk needed defragging, but so many people maintain that Macs don't need defragging that I rejected that. As this or the articles it led to point out, that's true with normal sized files. With large files like movies, things change. Defragging sometimes is needed. Makes sense. File Open/ then check the "Ignore rich text commands" box. Message-ID: <45B55DC1.9010201@richardklein.org> I just ripped a disc in iTunes. I know you can change the preferences to have it always rip to MP3 instead of AAC, but when it's ripping to the internal hard drive, AAC is fine with me. I also want to rip the disc to my MP3 player, though. Can I do a one-time rip in MP3? What's the best way to get the songs onto my MP3 player? -- Thanks! Rich
